Sjogren syndrome is a systemic disease characterized by lymphoid infiltration of the salivary and lacrimal glands. In the eye, it leads to a dry kerato-conjunctivitis (DKC). The main reason for DKC is a decrease or complete stoppage of tear production, resulting in a chronic conjunctivitis or blepharo-conjunctivitis at early stages, and epithelial dystrophy of cornea at late stages of the disease. The authors proposed to treat DKC by a pulsed electromagnetic field and tested this method in 30 patients. The course of magnetic therapy lasted for 10 days and caused a significant improvement in the state of the cornea. Magnetic field therapy was followed with conventional therapy. The restoration of tear production was stable in approximately half of the patients. The other patients showed improvement with a second course of magnetotherapy. The authors concluded that pulsed electromagnetic field therapy can be effectively used to treat DKC caused by Sjogren syndrome. [BENER 15175]
