The author described three cases in which picoTesla (pT)-range electromagnetic field (EMF) therapy improved "freezing" symptoms in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). All three patients exhibited freezing, that is, sudden attacks of immobility that occurred during walking, attempts to turn while walking, or during attempts to advance through narrow passages. The patients received several series of extracranial treatment with 7.5-pT pulsed EMFs. The stimuli were a series of 5 or 7 Hz pulses typically delivered during two 15- or 20-min periods separated by a break of 15 min. The frequency of freezing episodes in each patient was sharply decreased following each EMF treatment. The effects of the treatment usually lasted 3-6 days after which freezing gradually reappeared. Subsequent EMF treatments attenuated the freezing episodes. The author concluded that brief extracranial application of pT EMFs temporarily ameliorated the freezing in these patients. [BENER 15144]
