The authors examined the clinical efficacy of electromagnetic therapy in primary care management of venous leg ulcers. The study group consisted of 19 venous leg ulcer patients. Five patients received stimulation at 600 Hz (group B1), five received stimulation at 800 Hz (group B2) and 9 received placebo therapy. The mean ulcer size in the controls and groups B1 and B2 at the start of the experiment were 119, 63, and 81 mg size equivalents (MSEs), respectively. At the end of the study, day 50, the mean ulcer size in the controls and groups B1 and B2 were 78, 103, and 30 MSE, respectively. The decrease in size in group B2 from initial assessment was statistically significant. Pain scores decreased significantly in the treated groups; by 72% in group B1 and by 46% in group B2. Pain scores decreased only by 6% in the control group. The authors concluded that electromagnetic therapy provides significant benefits in the healing of venous leg ulcers and decreases in pain.
