There have been conflicting reports about whether it is possible to stimulate the human cerebellum through the intact scalp using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). To help clarify the situation, neurologists from London, Munich, Sydney, and Berlin conducted a series of experiments in which TMS was applied to the scalp over the motor cortex using different conditioning stimuli and types of magnetic coils. The study group consisted of 11 healthy volunteers seated in a comfortable reclining chair. TMS was produced using 2 magnetic stimulators or a high-voltage electric stimulator and 3 different coils. The electromyogram (EMG) responses elicited by TMS over the motor cortex could be suppressed by prior magnetic stimulation of the cerebellum. Two types of motor cortical suppression appear to be elicited by TMS applied over the posterior neck and skull: a cerebellar effect starting at 5 msec and a peripheral nerve effect starting later at 7-8 msec. January 09, 2003 - Gail My daughter had onset of wasting of the cerebellum nerve at the age of 12, no known injury or family history, she is now 19. She has progressive wasting of the left cerebellum and the right side is now becoming involved. We have been to see specialists in Montreal/Halifax Canada and Dr. Syd Gilman of Michigan, USA. She has had genetic testing, MRI's, blood tests, etc. The only thing noted on her blood work was Low lipo-proteins and Vitamin E. There is no diagnosis for her. They all agreed that she is missing something in her system which is causing the wasting??? She has tried tocopheral treatments of Vitamin E, multiple vitamins, a course of purging her system of antitoxins, etc. etc. The disease is still progressing. At the present time her condition includes...left eye turned in, decreased sensation of her left face, tongue, ear. She has vertigo, a muffled sound in her head, her speech is very soft and low. Her gait is very hesitant and shakey. She is unable to walk without help and is mostly in a wheelchair now. She is a very bright and beautiful young lady and if anyone has any ideas that may help her, it would be much appreciated. Thank you.

January 12, 2001 - Phyllis I have suffered many years from major depression (drug resistant). I am interested in participating in trial or any treatment facility, using neuroimaging (transcranial magnetic stimulation) My life has come to a stand still. Any suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

January 10, 2000 - Francisco Ortiz-Nieto, M.Sc (BME) I am trying to get information on TRM over the pallidus to create a movement control method on parkinson's disease patients. If somebody might help me I would highly appreciate.

February 01, 1999 - Kim DiGeorge My uncle has a disease of the brain, (cerebellum) that affects his motor abilities and coordination and he is losing his ability to take of himself. I really don't know the name, he has been to the Mayo clinic and there is nothing to help. Please let me know if anyone know the name of the disease and if there is any help. thanks
