The authors studied the effects of pulsed EMFs (PEMFs) on bone formation and bone loss during limb lengthening. The study group consisted of 13 patients who underwent lengthening of a total of 18 lower limb segments over an 18-month period. Seven patients were randomly assigned to receive PEMF stimulation and 6 to receive sham stimulation (placebo) in a double blind protocol. The overall average length of distraction achieved by PEMF stimulation did not differ significantly from the control value. There was no significant difference between the quantity of bone in the distraction gap of either group when measured at 12 months. Bone loss in segments distal to the lengthening sites was observed in both stimulated and control patients, but it was significantly more pronounced in the controls. The authors concluded that PEMF stimulation has no significant effect on the regeneration of bone during limb lengthening, but does prevent bone loss adjacent to the distraction gap. [BENER 15114]
