The authors examined the effects of focal rapid rate transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in patients suffering from drug-resistant depression. The study group consisted of 17 patients who met diagnostic criteria for major depression of psychotic subtype. Each patient received rTMS for the first 5 days of each month for 5 months. rTMS was applied in 5 possible conditions, depending on stimulation site and real vs. sham stimulation in a multiple placebo-controlled crossover design. Before and at the end of each week of the study, the patients' depression level was determined. Left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) stimulation of 11 patients produced pronounced improvements in their symptoms which lasted for about 2 weeks after each 5-day series of daily rTMS. The authors concluded that rTMS of the left DLPFC produces marked improvement for about 2 weeks in many patients with medication-resistant depression of psychotic subtype. [BENER 14749]

Internet posting dated 2/2000 stated, "profound difference in patients for two weeks after rTMS, every day, for five months." I'm wondering if this was THE improvement growth for those people who volunteered for the study?
