The authors performed clinical trials of microwave-induced hyperthermia for treatment of bone tumors in 62 patients. A typical treatment involved implanting 8 to 12 antennas into the tumor, and directly heating the tumor tissue by microwave irradiation as well as by thermal conduction. After treatment, the patients were followed up for periods of 3 to 36 months. Metastasis of the tumors to the lungs and elsewhere caused the death of 6 patients within 1 to 2 yr after treatment. Five patients had a local recurrence of the tumors. Forty one patients with malignant tumors and 15 with benign tumors were judged to be doing well. Orthopedic evaluations were performed in 34 tumor-free patients 1 yr post treatment. Twenty three were considered to be good, eleven were judged to be fair, deep infection occurred in 3 cases and pathological fractures occurred at the devitalized bone in 5 cases. Only 2 required immobilization. The authors concluded that microwave hyperthermia for treating bone tumors is safe and well tolerated by patients and produces encouraging oncological and orthopedic outcomes. [BENER 14681]
