Interference currents (IC) were used to facilitate functional recovery in patients with fractures of ankle and diaphyseal bones. The ICs used were 4,000 Hz currents pulsating at various frequencies from 0 to 100 Hz applied with electrodes on the sole of the foot and the upper portion of the ankle. All the patients performed special medical exercises starting 2-3 days after the trauma, when the leg was still immobilized in a plaster cast. In addition to these exercises, a group of patients was treated with IC. Each procedure lasted from 10 to 15 min, the course included from 3 to 10 procedures during the immobilization period, and 3 to 10 procedures after it. The IC treatment was found to facilitate functional recovery. In addition, the use of IC in the post-immobilization period substantially decreased edema in the affected extremity. Thus, the authors concluded that IC therapy produced a favorable effect on functional recovery after diaphyseal and ankle bone fractures. [BENER 13832]
