The upper urine pathways are often occluded by stone fragments after shock-wave lithotripsy. Researchers in Moscow successfully used a pulsed magnetic field to stimulate the motor activity of smooth muscles of the ureter for facilitation of the post-lithotripsy stone excretion process. The method was tested first in rabbits and then in patients using 4- to 6-minute treatments with the "AVIMP" apparatus which produces 20-30 pulses/min, 3-5 msec pulse width. Ureter muscle activity was monitored with needle electrodes. Some patients were also treated with iodine-bromide baths. 63% of patients in the combined treatment group showed complete stone excretion, as did 50% of patients who received the magnetic therapy only. Certain other electromagnetic therapies have proven to have a higher success rate. [BENER 13825]
