A group from Shanghai, China developed a technique, termed "implantable microwave coagulation" (IMC), which used microwave energy to resect intracranial meningiomas with minimal operative bleeding and reduced risk of postoperative hemorrhage. The procedure was performed on 62 meningioma patients. Total tumor removal was achieved in 53 (85.5%), subtotal excision was achieved in 7 patients (11.3%), and partial excision was achieved in 2 (3.2%). The recurrence rate after total tumor excision was 8.3%. The regrowth rate after subtotal tumor excision was 16.7%. No postoperative complications or operative mortality occurred. The authors wrote that IMC offers simplicity, reduced blood loss and smooth postoperative management compared with traditional techniques. [BENER 13740]

April 18, 1997 - B. Franklin (bfrank4fr@aol.com) My son has neurofibromatosis type 2 -- one of the five tumors he has is an optic sheath meningioma which is growing, causing proptosis and decreased vision. Is microwave viable for an optic tumor?
